The Emergency Room staff are horrible. My sister was transported there two days in a row, because of vomiting blood and severe pain following surgery completed the day before (Monday May 8) by a gastroenterologist IN THE SAME HOSPITAL. On May 9 she was vomiting blood at home and in severe pain, called 911 and was transported to EMMC by ambulance, where she sat for hours, they did bloodwork and said they found nothing wrong. She told them she had had surgery the day before, they didn't care. She was discharged and went home. The next morning, she contacted her surgeon (again) and was told to go to EMMC ER by ambulance immediately. When she arrived, she told the individual who finally talked with her and told her what happened and that her surgeon told her to come there to be checked out. She was informed that THE ER DOES NOT TAKE INSTRUCTIONS FROM ANYONE OUTSIDE THE ER, REGARDLESS OF THE FACT THAT THE SURGEON IS IN THE SAME BUILDING AND TOLD HER TO GO THERE!! She again was there for hours, they finally did an x-ray and told her she was discharged. The nurse's name was Lisa, not sure of the name of the PA/Doctor. They are totally inept and downright rude to the patients. WHY ARE THEY ALLOWED TO DISREGARD THE INSTRUCTIONS OF HER PHYSICIAN/SURGEON FROM THE HOSPITAL, ESPECIALLY A SURGEON WHO KNOWS HER AND HAS PERFORMED MULTIPLE SURGERIES ON HER??????? WHO IS OVERSEEING THIS ER? OBVIOUSLY, NO ONE! There were other patients waiting who walked out because they were ignored. Now, when my sister was an in-patient, she received excellent care on the 4th floor (except for decent food and one or two lazy nurses). Why is JACHO not involved? My sister is in agonizing pain and NO ONE CARES!!! WHAT HAPPENED TO "FIRST DO NO HARM" IN THE MEDICAL PROFESSION??!!

Better overall experience compared to one year ago with another knee replacement. Excellent surgeon, as usual but nursing care and skills fine, but this time the nurses, CNAs and nursing techs were much less rushed and had more time to complete tasks and take care of patients. Many fewer interruptions when they were in the room with me or my roommate, so they could provider more hands-on care, information and support without having to rush off and take care of another patient's needs. More relaxed atmosphere overall and more of a sense of teamwork among the floor staff. Many of the nurses and CNAs had students or new nurses with them and were patiently mentoring them and giving them time to try out their skills with appropriate supervision. Everyone very friendly and accommodating, creating an atmosphere of safety and reassurance.

Overnight for knee replacement. Great surgeon, good nurses, but they were over-extended. Almost every time a nurse or nurse's assistant was in the room with me, he or she was interrupted because another patient needed something. They just didn't have the time to give the kind of care they wanted to give, or that I could have benefited from. As in most hospitals these days, a patient at EMMC really needs to have an advocate there to make sure that the patient's needs are heard and met. I felt that I could advocate well enough for myself that night, but my spouse was prepared to stay over with me if needed. Good thing she didn't need to stay though, because my room didn't even have a chair for a visitor. When I got up there after surgery, there wasn't even a bedside table there, and no remote for the TV. Eventually, a table was found, and less importantly to me, the remote. No one ever found a chair for my spouse though. All in all, adequate care, but a little disappointing.

Our stay was good. Things could have been better, but the important aspects were done well.
