Overview

Carolyn Wasserheit, MD is a medical oncologist with particular expertise in the treatment of breast cancer and gynecologic malignancies. She is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Columbia University Medical Center. Dr. Wasserheit received her undergraduate degree, BS, suma cum laude, from Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education, CCNY. She received her MD degree from Mount Sinai School of Medicine where she received an American Medical Women’s Association Achievement Citation and was elected into Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. She completed her internship and residency in internal medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital. She also completed a hematology fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital. She later completed a fellowship in medical oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and during this time, developed a strong interest in caring for patients with breast cancer and gynecologic malignancies. Following her training, Dr. Wasserheit has spent her entire career working at academic cancer centers, initially at New York University where she focused on clinical research and was successful in obtaining a career development award and an RO-1 grant. She served as both principal and co-principal investigator on numerous clinical trials. Subsequently, she joined the staff at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Sleepy Hollow Regional Site where she focused primarily on patient care and worked at this site for 17 years. In 2016, Dr. Wasserheit joined the faculty at Columbia University Medical Center to provide cancer care at NYP/Lawrence Hospital. At NYP/Lawrence Hospital, Dr. Wasserheit is director of breast and gynecologic projects. She is also co-director of the cardio-oncology program and is collaborating with the cardiologists at both NYP/Lawrence Hospital and NYP/Hudson Valley Hospital in order to provide optimal multidisciplinary cardiac care for oncology patients receiving therapy which could have adverse effects on the heart and circulatory system. Dr. Wasserheit is also Associate Director of NYP/Lawrence Hospital Breast Disease Management Team and is a member of the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center at Columbia University Medical Center. She has been noted in Westchester Magazine as a “Top Doctor of Westchester” for the last several years and has been featured in Westchester MD News as well as in Westchester Daily Voice.
