Dr. Maltais was born in Quebec, Canada and earned his medical degree and a master’s in Physiology from Sherbrooke University in Quebec. He completed an Adult Cardiac Surgery Residency at Montreal Heart Institute, Montreal University and a research fellowship at Buffalo University in New York. Dr. Maltais obtained a Doctoral degree in Biomedical Sciences, specifically biomedical engineering and heart regeneration, at Montreal Heart Institute. He moved to Rochester, Minnesota to participate in a Heart Transplant and Mechanical Support Fellowship at the Mayo Clinic School of Medicine. Board certified, Dr. Maltais specializes in heart failure surgery, complete arterial revascularization, minimally invasive and robotic valve interventions, surgical treatment of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, complex aortic procedures and complex reoperations.Dr. Maltais previously served as the Clinical Vice-Chair of the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at Mayo Clinic in Rochester. He also worked for several years at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee as the Surgical Director of the Heart Transplantation and the Mechanical Circulatory Support Programs. Dr. Maltais is a widely published researcher, his bibliography lists more than 160 peer-reviewed original papers and articles. He has prepared more than 100 abstract and poster presentations in national and international meetings and has been included in ten book chapters.Additionally, he is a published non-fiction book author. He most recent book is called Healthcare Anonymous: Put Yourself First to Avoid Anxiety, Addiction, and Burnout. His book offers a map for healthcare workers to understand their struggles and start a process of recovery. He is a health and life coach and enjoys acting classes, tennis, swimming and biking.
