Dr. Lisardo Garcia-Covarrubias M.D. is a cardiothoracic surgeon, member of the Miami Cardiac and Vascular Institute at Baptist Health of South Florida. He is an Associate Professor and Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Florida International University Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine. He graduated Valedictorian from the Naval Medical School in Mexico City. His post-graduate training includes General Surgery Residency at Tulane University, Thoracic Surgery residency and Cardiothoracic transplant fellowship at the University of Miami-Jackson Memorial Hospital. He then became a Clinical Instructor at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center where he received specialized training in ventricular assist devices, heart transplantation and lung transplantation. Dr. Garcia-Covarrubias has led the efforts to establish an ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) program at Baptist and South Miami Hospitals.

He has extensive experience in on and off-pump coronary surgery and performs the largest number of bilateral mammary artery bypass surgery of the Institute. Shortly after joining Baptist, Dr. Garcia-Covarrubias embraced minimally invasive techniques to address the mitral and aortic valves. He has taught, operated and lectured internationally on minimally invasive valve surgery and is a founding member of the Baptist TAVR (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement) team. Additionally, Dr. Garcia-Covarrubias performs the largest amount of pacemaker and defibrillator lead extractions for the Institute.

Previous to his surgical training he completed research and clinical fellowships in hyperbaric medicine. He is Board-certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and an active member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, International Society of Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery and International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation among others. He has lectured and published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and is a reviewer for the Annals of Thoracic Surgery. His special interests include minimally invasive surgery, off-pump techniques, multiple arterial revascularization and treating patients with end stage heart disease.
