How To Know If You Have an Addictive Personality?

There are many ways to know if you have an addictive personality. An addictive personality is characterized by the inability to control impulses, compulsions, or cravings that continually bring on indulgences to achieve satisfaction. It’s important to know that not all addicts are using drugs or alcohol, other things could be deemed as addictive habits such as gambling, shopping, and even relationships!

Getting a Professional Diagnosis

The best way to know if you have an addictive personality is by getting a diagnosis from your physician or mental health professional. People who are more prone to addiction are individuals who are emotionally unstable or have a less stable temperament. If you find that you are constantly struggling to keep your emotions in check, a professional will be able to inform you of the signs and symptoms that are associated with addiction, as well as diagnose whether or not you’re addicted to anything.

Self-Diagnosis

Sometimes, it’s better to self-diagnose because it gives you a better idea of what is going on inside your mind. By doing this, you can pinpoint certain behaviors that may be bringing on compulsions and indulgences that lead to addiction:

  • Chemical abuse – Are there any signs and symptoms of chemical abuse? Are you using drugs or alcohol excessively?
  • Gambling – Do you turn to gamble excessively? Are you experiencing financial problems because of this?
  • Shopping – Is there an excessive amount of money or time spent on shopping? Does it interfere with your daily life and responsibilities?
  • Relationships – Is there a pattern of going from one relationship to another without any lasting relationships in between? Has your love life interfered with other aspects of your life such as your job, family, or friends?

Getting Outside Help

It’s time for you to get outside help if the answer is yes. Your addictive personality has taken a turn for the worst and it’s starting to become destructive. You may even feel out of control when it comes to these habits.

Self-help groups

There are many self-help groups available that can provide you with a lot of helpful information and tools on becoming sober from drugs or alcohol, gambling, shopping, etc. You’ll be able to mingle with other people who have been through the same experiences as you have been through so they understand what it’s like.

Inpatient addiction treatment programs

For those who need intensive treatments and therapies to overcome their addiction(s), an inpatient treatment facility is a good option to consider for a complete recovery program that will cover all aspects of your life including your body, mind, and spirit. Addiction Treatment Services has the best inpatient programs that can help you overcome your addiction.

Therapy Sessions and Treatment Centers

Therapy sessions are very helpful when it comes to addiction because there is a lot of support and encouragement that will help you get through the tough times. Having someone there with you can make all the difference in your recovery process. One of the most important things an addict needs during their recovery program is guidance. Treatment centers provide addicts with the tools they need to become sober again, they also guide them back on track for living healthy lives free from addiction. They can also help guide family members through this difficult time seeing as how addiction has the power to change lives drastically.

Addictive Personality Traits

Our personalities are shaped by many factors. Not everyone is born with the same personality traits. Addictive people tend to be very impulsive, compulsive, intelligent, and/or creative. Some of the most common traits an addict has are:

  • Impulsivity – Acting or making decisions without thinking them through
  • Compulsiveness – Having uncontrollable urges to behave in a certain way even though you know it’s wrong for example, continuing to gamble despite heavy losses
  • Intelligence – Being very smart or gifted in some aspect for example being good at mathematics or writing which can be used to sabotage their efforts because they may come up with schemes that will help them win instead of letting it go
  • Creativity – Having vivid imaginations that can be used productively as well as destructively

The following are some of the other main characteristics that make up an addictive personality:

  • A strong desire to do things their way, without being told what to do
  • Using drugs or alcohol as a coping mechanism for dealing with life’s issues
  • Making rules about not using drugs or alcohol, but breaking them anyway
  • Having a lack of willpower and self-control when it comes to indulgences that bring on addiction
  • Not feeling good enough unless they are doing something extreme such as partying all night or drinking excessively

Don’t waste any more time wondering if you have an addictive personality or not -just know that seeking help is always available when you’re ready. Don’t let addiction control your life any longer, it’s time for you to take back control and live the sober life that you deserve!
