Some of our most fundamental human qualities are realized every so often when a particular person enters our life. And often we rarely find these people holding high positions in society. But one such person who fits this description is Dr. Forough Farizani. In 1998, Dr. Farizani of Hillcroft Physicians opened her practice in Houston and has been striving to bring the best care to her community since opening day.
Hillcroft Physicians is now the second-largest family healthcare clinic in the Houston area due to her diligent work and the assistance of other dedicated physicians. And while Dr. Farizani and her team provide healthcare to all families, Hillcroft Physicians specializes in offering care to immigrant families who rely on Medicaid.
Her work is concerned with more than simply treating patients, but more so changing and improving their lives. Here, we’ll explore her work, her passion, and her dedication to providing and educating those who find sanctuary in her clinic.
Dr. Farizani began her career in medicine as a pre-med student at the University of Southern California and eventually went on to receive her medical degree from Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences. Along her educational journey, she also attended the University of Texas Memorial Southwest Family Practices for her residency.
Today, she is still not only deeply involved with helping families get the care they need, but she’s also actively involved in teaching. Currently, Dr. Farizani is a preceptor for the UT Arlington Nurse Practitioner program. In addition to her current healthcare and educational work, she has also taught at Baylor College of Medicine, preparing the way for the next generation of doctors and physicians.
Known as the “Ellis Island of Houston” for its rich cultural diversity, Dr. Farizani began Hillcroft Physicians’ work by seeing patients in the Gulfton/Sharpton region. It is within this densely populated area where most who seek out medical care have difficulty finding and paying for quality healthcare services. She and all physicians of Hillcroft provide critical care for both new and established immigrants who find themselves in the densely populated urban centers of greater Houston.
And their work is a difficult task, as language and cultural barriers often impede access to care and other services which are critical for establishing oneself and living in the United States today. At the end of the day, Dr. Farizani and her team at Hillcroft Physicians have greatly reduced the need for newly established immigrants to seek out local hospital and emergency room services for primary care needs, which can be costly even for established, natural born Americans.
Due to the rich cultural diversity of Houston in general, and particularly to the Gulfton/Sharpton region, language barriers are often a huge impediment for an individual to communicate effectively, especially when it comes to basic healthcare needs. Dr. Farizani herself speaks both English and Spanish, as well as Farsi. And as a means for accommodating members of diverse cultures, Hillcroft Physicians employs those who not only speak the native languages of many patients, but who also understand the many facets of cultural beliefs, traditions, and restrictions of the immigrant population.
In this respect, Dr. Farizani and Hillcroft Physicians have cultivated an ethic of understanding by employing healthcare providers and medical staff who come from similar regions as the immigrants who find their way to the clinic. This compassionate act has not only formed a cultural bridge that allows access to critical healthcare needs, but it has also opened a sanctuary for those who have found themselves seeking hope in a foriegn land.
It’s often said that the qualities of a good society are weighed by how it treats its most vulnerable members. And the qualities of the highest moral good are truly reflected by Dr. Farizani and her team of dedicated healthcare personnel at Hillcroft Physicians. In this respect, Dr. Farizani and Hillcroft physicians have truly set the bar high for all healthcare facilities to follow.
