4 Ways To Upgrade Your Medicine Cabinet

You know, when you’re watching a television show or a movie, and someone goes into the bathroom at another person’s house, and there’s a medicine cabinet – you find yourself wondering if they’re going to look inside. You may also think to yourself that you would look inside – or perhaps you’re someone that would never, ever look in another person’s medicine cabinet. Either way, you look in your own cabinet every day, and it’s worth it to give it a slight upgrade and tidy up from time to time.

Maybe you have no idea how to start, which is normal; medicine cabinets can quickly become full and overwhelming. If you want to upgrade yours and need a nudge in the right direction, well, keep on reading.

Make It Match

One way to give yourself an instant upgrade is to make sure that everything in your medicine cabinet matches. Of course, you’re going to have multiple brands of products – your acne skin care products aren’t all going to have the same packaging – but you can match in other areas. For example, store all your q-tips, cotton balls, bobby pins, etc., in the same color and style container. While the containers will likely be different shapes and sizes, you’ll get a sense of uniformity if they match. Consider visiting your local thrift store for small, plain glass containers if you’ve got a limited budget. Maybe you have a bigger budget, then go crazy in The Container Store. The end result will pay off and be very relaxing every time you open the cabinet.

Make It Minimalist

Another area that will spruce up your medicine cabinet is to give it a minimalist feel. Do you need three types of deodorant and two types of toothpaste? Maybe you do – but there are surely other areas that you can pare down in. At the same time, perhaps you’re storing your backups in your medicine cabinet, giving it an overflowing feel. Not only does it make it harder for you to find what you’re looking for while you’re getting ready in the morning rush, but it also makes it easy to knock items out while you’re searching for something else. So, take time to pare down and toss what you no longer use. Why hold onto a nail polish color that didn’t flatter your skin tone?

Additionally, if you have a lot of products in your medicine cabinet that are unopened and unused (and you know you won’t be using them), it’s worth donating these items to others in need. Some of the type items that homeless and domestic violence shelters are in need of are toiletries. So, as you’re paring down, make sure you have a box designated for donations.

Decorate The Interior

Remember in middle or high school how you decorated the inside of your locker, and it made you smile every time you opened the door? Well, there’s no doubt that your taste level has come a long way since high school, but you can still spruce up the interior of your cabinet in fun, mature ways. The most straightforward upgrade in this department would be some peel and stick wallpaper. You can buy these by the square foot, making them easy to cut to size small enough for your cabinet. Choose a pattern or color that matches the rest of your bathroom, and voila! Instant chic upgrade.

Replace It Entirely

Whether you’re renting or your own, chances are fifty/fifty that your medicine cabinet is a little old and dated. Why not consider replacing the entire unit altogether. With the popularity of home makeover and renovation shows, there are more options than ever at our fingertips for upgrading small spaces in our homes. So, if you don’t like the look or size of your current cabinet, shop around and find one you do like. If you’re renting, you may not be allowed to or want to invest in putting up a new cabinet. But, you could always check with your landlord to see if that’s something they’d be willing to give you a rent discount on – especially if you see yourself staying there for a long time, it could be worth it.

With the weather turning colder, we’re going to be spending more time in our homes and staring out our surroundings – so ’tis the season for a medicine cabinet upgrade. This is a simple weekend project, even if you go the route of replacing the entire unit. Happy DIY’ing!
